More About Brinton Vision’s Hometown
Sitting near the confluence of the Missouri River and the Mississippi River, St. Louis is the second-largest city in the State. A population of just over 300,000 people was reported in the 2020 census. The larger metropolitan area covers two states and is home to over 2.8 million people, making it the 20th-largest market in the United States.
Native American Mississippian’s first populated the region. Historic Native American tribes in the area included the Illiniwek and the Siouan-speaking Osage people. Their major regional center was called Cahokia Mounds, most active from 900 AD to 1500 AD.
European fur traders Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Auguste Chouteau, and Pierre Laclède arrived from France and founded the city in 1764. They named it for the King of France, Louis IX. In 1764, following France’s defeat in the Seven Years’ War, Spain gained control of the city. In 1800, it was returned to France, where it is promptly sold as part of the Louisiana Purchase to the United States. The explorers Lewis and Clark used the city as the launching point for their famous expedition.
St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River making it the fourth-largest city in the United States from 1870-1920. And in 1904, Saint Louis hosted the Summer Olympics.
St. Louis has a healthy economy with strengths in the service, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and tourism industries. The areas Gross Domestic Product exceeded $160 billion in 2017. Eight Fortune 500 companies call St. Louis home.
